The Abuse of Provigil

In today’s fast paced world, people are desperate to make the most of their time, despite the health risks. Some have resorted to using drugs such as Provigil to increase their energy levels and fit more into their busy schedules.

Provigil is commonly used to treat a number of sleep conditions and disorders like narcolepsy and sleep apnea. However, a recent news article discusses how some people are using the drug to simply enhance their energy levels or improve their focus. While there are many comparisons to Ritalin and Adderall for its uses, Provigil has actually more in common with medication for erectile dysfunction. Heavy users of Provigil have dubbed it "Viagra for the mind."

The hype surrounding this so-called focus enhancement drug has caused a drastic increase in sales, up 73 percent in the past four years. Sales jumped to $1.44 million from just $843,687. It’s not difficult to obtain a prescription for Provigil or purchase it outright. There happen to be dozens of websites that give tips on convincing physicians to prescribe the drug or how to buy it.

The problem lies in that no one clearly knows what the long-term effects will be from those taking the medication, especially if they do not have a medical condition.

Side effects of the drug, however, include a whole host of things from trouble breathing, heart problems and psychiatric issues. Those suffering from narcolepsy or sleep apnea are happy to take on the risks in order to have relief from their disorder.

Others without a real medical condition unfortunately don’t seem to mind. Getting more energy and focus seem to be an acceptable payoff.

Both medical professionals and the drug manufacturer themselves warn of the risks associated with taking Provigil.
